How to meet the Standard for Full Registration (SFR)

To become a fully registered teacher in Scotland, you are required to meet The Standard for Full Registration (SFR).

The SFR sets out the qualities and capabilities expected of you during your probation period and provides a professional standard against which decisions can be made on whether to grant you full registration.

Your probationary experience should result in professional development in all three key elements of the SFR:

  • Professional knowledge and understanding
  • Professional skills and abilities
  • Professional values and personal commitment

Professional knowledge and understanding

"Professional knowledge and understanding" is the first of the three aspects of The Standard for Full Registration (SFR) that you are required to meet. This involves:

  • curriculum
  • education systems and professional responsibilities
  • principles and perspectives

Professional skills and abilities

"Professional skills and abilities" is the second of the three aspects of the Standard for Full Registration that you are required to meet and involves:

  • teaching and learning
  • classroom organisation and management
  • assessment of pupils
  • professional reflection and communication

Professional values and personal commitment

"Professional values and personal commitment" is the third of the three aspects. To meet this criteria you must show:

  • a commitment to social justice and inclusion in your day-to-day practice
  • that you take responsibility for your professional learning and development
  • that you value, respect and are an active partner in the communities in which you work
