Induction Year Guidance

The Teacher Induction Scheme provides a guaranteed one-year training post to every eligible student graduating with a teaching qualification from one of Scotland's universities.

GTC Scotland, in partnership with the Scottish Government Education Department, is responsible for the administration of the scheme.

The scheme is not compulsory, but it allows probationer teachers to be considered for full registration within one school year (190 teaching days). It offers a number of benefits, including:

  • a maximum class commitment of 0.7 full time equivalent
  • dedicated time set aside for professional development
  • access to an experienced teacher as a nominated probationer supporter

In this section of the site you will find information and guidance on the following areas:

  • Monthly guidance on what areas you should aim to focus on each month throughout your period of probation
  • How to meet the SFR explains what steps you will need to take to meet the Standard for Full Registration (SFR)
  • Probation process outlines the process of probation and gives more information on each of the areas you will need to look at as you work towards achieving the SFR
  • Key People in Induction introduces you to each of the people and organisations you will work with in your probation year.
  • Your Profile explains how you complete your Interim and Final Profiles (the bodies of evidence you submit to GTC Scotland to prove you are meeting the SFR)
