Probation process

Your induction year should follow a structured process. Each part of this process is a building block in developing your CPD portfolio, which you will use to evidence that you are meeting the Standard for Full Registration (SFR).

All information gathered throughout your probation service is documented in your Online Profile.

August–December 2010

Your first task is to set up an initial Supporter Meeting to:

  • transfer your strengths from your Institute of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) profile onto your Initial Professional Development Action Plan (IPDAP)
  • draw up a Professional Development Action Plan for the August to December period
  • select an initial focus for your Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

You will spend the rest of this session teaching your Timetable and undertaking CPD experiences.

We recommend that you continue to have a Supporter Meeting each week. Meetings should have a focus directly linked to your IPDAP.

There should also be regular Observed Teaching Sessions (we recommend you have five sessions during this period).

Interim Profile completion (November/December 2010)

In December, information and evidence gathered from August to December will form the basis of your Interim Profile. A more formal Supporter Meeting is recommended for November.

Your Interim Profile will be submitted in November/December to GTC Scotland. (You should contact your school headteacher or your local authority probation manager to confirm the exact submission date.)

If the recommendation is "Satisfactory", you will be given access to the Final Profile. However, if the recommendation is "Unsatisfactory" or "Cause for Concern", you will be given access to a second Interim Profile, which should be completed and submitted at Easter (please contact your local authority probation manager to confirm the exact dates). You will then be given access to the Final Profile to complete and submit in June.

January–June 2011

Continue documenting your personal development for the next half of the year using your Online Profile to record your:

  • timetable
  • Professional Development Action Plan
  • CPD experiences
  • Supporter Meetings
  • Observed Teaching Sessions

Final Profile completion and submission (May/June 2011)

Information and evidence gathered since January will form the basis of your Final Profile. Your Final Profile will be submitted in May/June to GTC Scotland in the same way as you submitted your Interim Profile. (You should contact your headteacher or your local authority probation manager to confirm the exact submission date.)

All of the evidence recorded during your probation service will form the basis of your CPD portfolio.

Extension process

If your Final Profile recommends an extension to your probationary requirement you will be notified in writing of the further period required.
