How to meet the SFR
To become a fully registered teacher in Scotland, you are required to meet the Standard for Full Registration (SFR).
The SFR sets out the qualities and capabilities expected of you during your induction year and provides a professional standard against decisions which decisions can be made on whether to grant you full registration.
Your induction experience should result in professional development in all three key elements of the SFR:
- Professional Knowledge and Understanding
- Professional Skills and Abilities
- Professional Values and Personal Commitment
Professional Knowledge and Understanding
The Professional Knowledge and Understanding area of the SFR includes:
- curriculum
- education systems and professional responsibilities
- principles and perspectives
Curriculum
You are required to have:
- detailed knowledge and understanding of the relevant areas of the pre-school, primary or secondary school curriculum
- sufficient knowledge and understanding to fulfil your responsibilities for literacy and numeracy; personal, social and health education; and ICT.
- an understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development
- sufficient knowledge and understanding to meet your responsibilities to teach cross-curricular aspects
Education systems and Professional Responsibilities
You are required to have:
- a broad understanding of the principal features of the education system, educational policy and practice, and of your part in it
- detailed working knowledge of your sector, of the school(s) and of your professional responsibilities within them
Principles and Perspectives
You are required to:
- articulate our professional values and practices relating them to theoretical principles and perspectives
- have research-based knowledge relating to learning and teaching and a critical appreciation of the contribution of research education in general
Professional Skills and Abilities
The professional skills and abilities area includes:
- teaching and learning
- classroom organisation and management
- assessment of pupils
- professional reflection and communication
Teaching and Learning
You are required to:
- plan coherent and progressive teaching programmes
- communicate clearly making use of a variety of media, and interact productively with pupils, individually and collectively
- use a range of teaching strategies and resources which you can evaluate and justify in terms of curriculum requirements and the needs and abilities of pupils
- set and maintain expectations and pace of work for all pupils
- work co-operatively with other professionals and adults
Classroom Organisation and Management
You are required to:
- organise and manage classes and resources to achieve sage, orderly and purposeful activity
- manage pupil behaviour and classroom incidents fairly, sensitively and consistently, making use of rewards and sanctions, and seeking the advice of colleagues when necessary
Assessment of Pupils
You are required to:
- understand and apply the principles of assessment, recording and reporting
- use the results of assessment to evaluate and improve your teaching, and the learning and attainment of your pupils
Professional Reflection and Communication
You are required to:
- learn from your experience of practice and from critical evaluation of relevant literature in your professional development
- convey an understanding of practice and general education matters in your professional dialogue and communication
- act to improve your own professional practice, contribute to your own professional development, and engage in the process of curriculum development
Professional Values and Personal Commitment
To meet the professional values and personal commitment area of the SFR, you must show:
- a commitment to social justice and inclusion in your day-to-day practice
- that you take responsibility for your professional learning and development
- that you value, respect and be active partners in the communities you work within
